What Users Love
I’m so glad this app exists, now I can read my physical/kindle copies with an audiobook without having to pay an extra 20 bucks!
They have a wide selection of audiobooks and they upload new ones pretty frequently.
What Frustrates Users
The update forced me to create an account and then when i tried to find books I was reading before they were gone.
It doesn’t save my spot in the audiobook which is kinda sad.
TOO MANY ADS... It freezes the app making it unusable

SWOT Analysis
Core Strengths
- 100% free access model with no hidden costs
- Strong selection of 'BookTok' and classic literature
- Integrated Apple and Google sign-in for easy onboarding
Critical Frictions
- Failure to auto-save playback progress
- Intrusive ads that cause app instability/freezing
- Unstable content library management during updates
Growth Levers
- Synchronized ebook text integration to match Loyal Books
- Robust offline mode to compete with Oodles Books
- Multi-language support for global student demographics
Market Threats
- LibriVox's dominance in library size and sync reliability
- Libby's superior UX and access to modern free content
- Rapid churn to 'New Kids' like Bound due to recent update instability
What are the next best moves?
Restore missing content and fix account-linked library data
Content removal after the v1.4.0 update is the #1 complaint theme and a primary driver of the 'Upset' sentiment trend.
Implement automatic 'last played' progress saving
Users explicitly cited the lack of auto-save as a major pain point, forcing manual bookmarking which is non-standard for the category.
Optimize ad frequency and technical implementation
Multiple reviews indicate ads are 'freezing the app,' making the product unusable and directly impacting the 3.3-star rating.
Feature Gaps vs Competitors
- Reliable progress syncing across devices (available in LibriVox)
- Synchronized ebook text (available in Loyal Books)
- Robust offline support (available in Oodles Books)
- Cloud storage streaming (available in Bound)
Key Takeaways
Audiobooks King has a powerful '100% free' hook but is currently self-sabotaging through a broken update that deleted user content. To survive, the PM must immediately fix the progress-saving bug and stabilize the library, or users will migrate to LibriVox which offers 50,000+ titles with superior reliability.
Where Is It Heading?
Declining
Recent v1.4.0 update caused widespread content loss and forced registration, leading to an 'Upset' user mood.
App recently entered the charts at #94 Free (Books), showing initial discovery potential despite technical flaws.
Core utility features like auto-save are missing, while competitors like LibriVox and Oodles are expanding their feature sets.
