The app relies on your devices magnetometer. If you use a magnetic case, the compass will not work correctly. Similarly, if you set your phone on a metal surface the compass will malfunction. You can easily restore accuracy by removing your device from magnetic or metallic objects, and rotating your device in a figure 8 pattern to calibrate the magnetometer.
