What is the recent mood?
“Recent user voice shows a frustrated sentiment. Users appreciate utility for trip planning, but report subscription and billing practices and inaccurate data.”
What Users Love
Great app for travelers! I use an RV and they help me find spots.
The Dyrt was instrumental to the 101 stops before we came back home.
What Frustrates Users
They'll charge you before your seven day trial is up... this app is a scam!
I cancelled and deleted the app... but over the course of the next month or so I have literally continued to be charged 59.99 over and over.
This apps directions/coordinates have been more wrong than right.
Availability is inaccurate, rendering the search for campground feature almost useless.

The Nemesis
Head to Head
While The Dyrt remains the superior tool for data-heavy public land research and 'sold-out' alerts, Hipcamp has the edge in user experience and exclusive inventory. Hipcamp's higher sentiment suggests a more reliable platform for users frustrated by The Dyrt's recent stability issues.
What sets The Dyrt: RV & Free Camping apart
- +
The Dyrt offers 'Dyrt Alerts,' a high-utility feature for snagging cancellations at sold-out public campgrounds that Hipcamp lacks
- +
More comprehensive database of free dispersed camping on BLM and USFS lands compared to Hipcamp's private-first focus
What's Hipcamp: Book Camping & RVs's Edge
- -
Significantly stronger user sentiment and app stability compared to The Dyrt's recent technical and billing complaints
- -
Direct booking integration eliminates the need for users to jump to external government websites for many listings
Contenders
RV-safe GPS routing that accounts for bridge heights and weight limits
Integration with RV Trip Wizard for complex, multi-stop itinerary planning
Crowdsourced cell service signal strength reports (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) for every location
Strictly moderated review system that often yields higher-quality data than larger platforms
Recreation.gov
Booz Allen Hamilton Inc.
The official gateway for federal campsite bookings; while a utility, it is the 'source of truth' that users must use to finalize plans.
Direct access to the official federal reservation system for National Parks and Forest Service land
Real-time availability data that third-party apps must scrape or sync
Roadtrippers - Trip Planner
Roadtrippers
Competes directly with The Dyrt's 'Road Trip' and 'Drive Time' PRO features for itinerary mapping.
Advanced waypoint optimization for long-distance travel
Discovery of 'weird' roadside attractions and points of interest beyond just campgrounds

The outtake for The Dyrt: RV & Free Camping
SWOT Analysis
Core Strengths
- Massive community-driven database
- Unique 'Dyrt Alerts' feature for sold-out sites
- Strong category ranking (#7 Grossing)
Critical Frictions
- Aggressive and poorly perceived billing practices
- Technical instability (crashes on site details)
- Data inaccuracies in coordinates and availability
Growth Levers
- Integrate social networking features to compete with Sēkr
- Expand 'Instant Book' inventory to compete with Hipcamp
- Add RV-specific navigation (bridge heights/weight limits)
Market Threats
- Hipcamp's superior UX and stable platform
- User churn due to 'scam' billing perceptions
- Official Recreation.gov app improving its direct booking utility
What are the next best moves?
Audit and redesign the PRO trial-to-subscription flow.
Subscription/billing is the #1 complaint theme, with users labeling the app a 'scam' due to early charges and cancellation issues.
Implement a data verification sprint for coordinates and amenity status.
Users report inaccurate coordinates and outdated dump station data, which renders core search features 'useless' for some.
Prioritize stability fixes for the 'Site Details' view.
Sentiment data shows consistent crashing when users attempt to view site details, preventing core task completion.
Feature Gaps vs Competitors
- Instant Book for private listings (available in Hipcamp)
- RV-safe GPS routing (available in RV LIFE)
- Crowdsourced cell service signal reports (available in Campendium)
- Social networking/nearby camper discovery (available in Sēkr)
Key Takeaways
The Dyrt is a powerful utility with a 'Frustrated' user base. While its 'Dyrt Alerts' and database scale provide a strong competitive moat, the app is currently vulnerable to churn from Hipcamp due to severe billing friction and technical instability.
Where Is It Heading?
Declining
User sentiment is 'Upset' regarding billing practices, creating a significant brand trust deficit.
Recent v5.44.1 update focused only on bug fixes, suggesting a lack of near-term feature innovation.
Maintains a #7 Grossing rank, indicating strong revenue capture despite sentiment issues.
